The Philosophy of Freedom

A people’s freedom is only as good as its capacity to defend it. On this Veterans Day, I got to thinking about what makes us free. And the short answer is my first statement—if you can’t defend your freedom, then you will lose it. Don’t believe me? As an example and a reality check, recall how much of the spiritual enlightenment, customs, and freedoms of the Native American people were lost when shots were fired by the European settlers. How free do you think England would be if the Nazis had triumphed in their attacks? No, whether we like it or not, without being able to defend our freedoms, they will be lost to the history books.

And that’s why, on this Veterans Day, I want to thank the individuals and families who have served our country. Without your sacrifices, “freedom and justice for all” would be a hollow promise. Thank you.
